Worship One, Love All Others

~ Ken Williams

We know our worship of God is legit when his love flows from us to all others. He gives each of us spiritual gifts for the common good of his church. If we attempt to place personal identity above the common good we will misuse God’s spiritual gifts and work against unity. Unity is different than uniformity. God gives a variety of spiritual gifts to members to make one body, the church. Our unity is known when a group of individuals, each given spiritual gifts, surrender their will to God’s to serve for the common good. As with God, Father/Son/Holy Spirit, there is oneness and variety. In our Western culture we admire individuality. People look for their “15 minutes” of fame. This would seem to justify our existence and give us “identity”. The apostle Paul would have thought that we sell out too cheap in the Western world. We only seek 15 minutes of fame. In I Corinthians 12:1-13 the apostle explained how we can be what he created us to be and enjoy this forever in the love and harmony of Christ’s church. This works against our natural instincts but we must learn to place the common good of others above our own self interest and in this we gain the personal identity we want. (I Corinthians 12:1-13)
