The Disciple’s
Heart of Prayer & Supplication
~
Eric Shaw
"Paul makes interesting comments about life in difficult
times. He made a lot of the comments from prison. Like “be
joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances” (1
Thessalonians 5:16-18). Like what? There are days that just
doesn’t make sense. Or Colossians 4:2 while in chains
he says, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful
and thankful.” One more: “Be joyful in hope,
patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Romans
12:12). Paul had a different outlook than most of us. Reactions
like these do not come as reactions to circumstances. When
we are able to react like Paul, it is more about the habits
of our hearts by which we meet the troublesome circumstances
of life – habits developed by our ongoing and continually
deepening relationship with Jesus. Our relationship with
Jesus gives us a different frame of reference. When we live
in a posture of prayer and supplication, our agenda in life
becomes more a focus of God’s presence and purpose
than our desires and comfort."
