Reading the headlines and watching the evening
news is far from uplifting. To a large extent, what we feed
into our minds determines how we feel about ourselves and
what we do with our lives. If we focus our minds on earthly
things, we will be given over to earthly pursuits and values;
if we focus our minds on the things of heaven, we will more
greatly reflect God and his values. Fixing our minds firmly
on God as a spiritual discipline helps us weather life’s
storms and be at peace no matter the circumstances. “Whatever
is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is
pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if
anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about
such things . . .. And the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians
4:8-9).
