Paul affirms his affection for the Philippians and announces a theme which will run throughout the letter – joy, joyfulness and rejoicing. For Paul, joy is not the result of being in comfortable circumstances but seeing the gospel make progress through his circumstances and through the circumstances of the believers. (Philippians 1:3-5)
