The Gift of Suffering
~ Eric
Shaw
The wise men from the East brought gifts to
Jesus in the form of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In many
ways these gifts were symbolic of the life and purpose of
Jesus. During the Advent season we will explore all three.
Frankincense was an aromatic used in sacrificial offerings
and anointing oil, touted for its medicinal, soothing, calming,
restorative, clarifying and meditative properties. Ancients
burned it believing it to carry their prayers to heaven.
It illustrates Jesus’ role as priest and the sin-cleansing
sacrifice he would make for each of us. (Isaiah 53)
